Mother’s Day was approaching fast and what to do…? we were almost moved into the new unit in Pinchbeck, Spalding… but not quite and not ready for customers. I took a deep breath and designed some posters and flyers and we arranged a POP-UP shop back at Evolve HQ. The plan was to open Friday and Saturday. We spent all day Thursday getting set up and making ‘ready-to-go’ designs – the workshop was overflowing with beautiful British flowers, would anyone come? Bit of a gamble as it would be the first and last in this location!
As Mother’s Day is later this year the selection was fabulous; Lincolnshire scented stocks, double tulips in all the colours of the rainbow, and blousy Ranunculus from Norfolk were joined by Hyacinth, Alstroemeria and lots of scented Eucalyptus foliage.
Friday arrived and the doors opened …. there was a quiet air of anticipation and as we are in a cul-de-sac it’s even more tense as the passing trade is normally taking the dogs to the park… could this have been an expensive mistake? Orders were coming in and I made some Facebook live videos and made up more ready-to-go designs.
Orders were made and people promised to call in on Saturday. Phew! Keep Calm and Carry On!
Saturday arrived and it was a gloriously sunny day – some may say too hot! Today was my 50Th Birthday and here I was waiting for customers with a workshop full of flowers spilling onto the patio and out of the gate. By 9.30am there was a queue forming, by 12am some more friends had arrived and were having an early picnic lunch under the pagoda whilst I made up their orders… an endless stream of customers popping in … I didn’t stop all day… my offspring were entertaining their school friends whilst their Mum’s and Dad’s sorted out flowers for their grandparents. It was exhausting and with a little help from the truly amazing unicorn cake I had the sugar fix of all sugar fixes and kept going until dusk. I lost count of the bouquets and arrangements made –LOTS! – there were a lot of happy shoppers and most going out of the gate with two or three flowery gifts.
A fabulous day, perfect flower buying weather! Somehow always customers leave flowers to the very last moment – I suppose it’s likened to buying food; wanting it as fresh as possible.
Next year I will have to persuade you all to put in orders so I can make enough!
The Happy Florist, slept well and enjoyed her Mothering Sunday!
