    It’s a small world

Christmas Eve morning, picture the scene…my hands and arms ache, I’ve been running the Festive POP-UP shop since last week and exhausted. I can’t seem to gain momentum and am being rather sloth-like in getting up. Not really a surprise, Christmas seems to be the longest peak ever. It just goes on and on. By the second week in December, all my fellow florists are also burnt out from wreath workshops, chasing orders, late nights and extra shifts. I’m no different. Keep Calm and Carry On. I can’t get up…until….the phone rings It is a long-distance call from Australia. The lady caller emigrated from Pinchbeck, Spalding, Lincolnshire to Sydney Australia…

    Box of British

Many of you may know I started my journey in flowers several decades ago …in fact, I have been flowering about the world since 1985 to be precise. In the early years, I promoted a disposable (recyclable) vase product. I was teaching floristry part-time at Easton College and doing weddings and events for the rest of the week. Fifty-six weddings in the busiest year!! I went along to the local High Street to set up a business bank account and had a chat with the bank manager – he asked me about my business and I told him about teaching floristry and the wedding flowers. Then I showed him the…

Flowers are always a good idea!

Mother’s Day was approaching fast and what to do…? we were almost moved into the new unit in Pinchbeck, Spalding… but not quite and not ready for customers.  I took a deep breath and designed some posters and flyers and we arranged a POP-UP shop back at Evolve HQ. The plan was to open Friday and Saturday. We spent all day Thursday getting set up and making ‘ready-to-go’ designs – the workshop was overflowing with beautiful British flowers, would anyone come? Bit of a gamble as it would be the first and last in this location! As Mother’s Day is later this year the selection was fabulous; Lincolnshire scented stocks,…

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 – Born & Bred

RHS Chelsea Flower Show is spreading the street of London with the Chelsea in Bloom floral installations providing a fabulous warm up to the main event; this year some breath-taking designs – I was so disappointed I couldn’t attend. As a consolidation Evolve sponsored the super talented Julie Pearson and Vanessa Wellock. These two ladies pulled off a Silver Medal last year so I knew they would create something amazing. Julie told me all about their entry in the Floral Art marquee and how they wanted to achieve a 100% British entry. They created a fantastic design of Britishness titled BORN and BRED. Their design was an entry in the…

Donington Flower Festival 2019 – Memories

Donington Flower Festival 2019 – Memories St Mary’s and The Holy Rood Church, Donington. By Helen Chambers NDSF, Evolve Flowers Ltd.     This year’s theme ‘Memories’ caused much pondering over lots of different occasions and what to display to create…what should follow last years’ Mad Hatters Tea Party? Memories is a brilliant title as the theme can be translated in a multitude of ways; from childhood memories of gardening with parents, happy trips to the seaside or remembering a sadly lost loved one. I finally decided on ‘The Big Day’ and the concept started to unfold based around a wedding day. Wedding flowers are such an important part of…

Part 2: Tips To Take Away – What Can Florists Learn From Large Retailers?

Actionable advice based on years of working for large-scale commercial flower companies.   Play to your strengths: don’t fight for the same business as supermarkets Use the same strategies, but with unique designs to really stand out in the market. There are a lot of products that supermarkets can’t produce or deliver easily. It’s difficult for them to react quickly, and they can sell-out too quickly or find they’re over-stocked if something goes awry in the supply chain. Buy wisely, look after your designs, clean those vases, condition all flowers properly and make sure customers know about after care.   Prepare for the peaks ahead of time Early planning…

    A Week at the Museum

British Flowers Week is the brainchild of New Covent garden Market and is now in its sixth year, it aims to encourage more consumers to purchase British Flowers and plants. Florists were challenged to create an installation to be displayed in the newly refurbished Garden Museum in Lambeth, London. The display, using only British grown flowers and plants was to be 1.5m wide 2m long and 3 metres tall and to be in keeping with the features of the museum, and without any floral foam used.  Helen Chambers NDSF from Evolve flowers Ltd, based at Donington, near Spalding submitted her design which was later selected as one of the six…

Part 1: Behind The Scenes At Supermarkets

An inside look at what goes on within supermarket flower departments.   Year-round consistency is critical When designing floral products for supermarkets, every bouquet within a particular price point must appear consistent in value for money, throughout the year. This means that every stem has to be researched carefully. If thousands of bouquets are dependent on a specific kind of Germini, we need to make sure that enough will be grown, which in turn means the grower has to schedule it into their programme for the following year. This involves lots of calendars and Excel spreadsheets! Each bouquet design will sell in-store for six to seven weeks before it’s altered…
